Chapter 18

Following my hunch, I stopped by Adam Acre’s Gun shop, a small little hole in the wall dump that happened to be in one of those little shopping malls on the east side of Portland. It was there I managed to get a few things for our trip out to the Columbia Gorge….A 1985 Weatherby Mark V 300 magnum hunting rifle, a Remington 1100 shotgun, and an HK MP5 Semi-automatic submachine gun. A got a few boxes of ammo for each of them and a carrying bag for them. As much as I wanted to spend all day there and buy much more, I was only out to find what was needed to get the job done. No sense in overdoing it.

Leanne looked out the front seat window at the rather large duffle bag that carried all three weapons awkwardly. Despite the rainy season’s overcast and near dark appearance, I could still see the whites of her eyes get larger while I made for the trunk to put ‘em all in.

“What’d you get?” She asked after getting in and shutting the door.

“Just a little stopping power. We’re gonna need it for later.”

“Stopping power, huh?”

“Well my thoughts are is that if we’re going to go over to the house on that map, we could use a little insurance in case something happens.” I reassured her.

“Like a small army.”

“Yes. If that’s what you want to call it.”

“For what you got? You better believe it that I want to call it, because that is what it is the equivalent of. A small Army.”

I smirked at Leanne with a sarcastic smile in return.

“Always expect the worse and hope for the best. Captain taught me that.”

“Yea, well I’ll be sure to send a thank you note when we get back.” Leanne barked as she stepped on the gas to my navy blue Volvo, going through the twilight into the entrance to I-84, East of Portland, and into the very depths of the gorge. As time went on, the sun dimmed to evening, and Leanne looked out amongst the Columbia Gorge to some of the most incredible views one could ever see, probably wondering what the hell was going on or what she got herself into.

As I stared into the great gorge beyond, I couldn’t help but to think of the opposite, reminding myself that for all anyone knew Rudy could be tied up and held hostage somewhere deep in a chasm, stashed away for some unknown reason. I glared out thinking about him and about Jenny, and about how they have so much in common at this very moment, trapped in darkness with no way to get out. The only thing that really separated the two of them was the hand of fate and death itself.

Night started to descend. I pulled to the side of the road and turned on the car light to find where the hell I was going, and after a while, I turned to Leanne to ask for help, only to find her fast asleep.
